Imagine an adult reading cricket definitions in one app while keeping personal notes in another. To try split screen, open the first app, swipe up, hold, and release to show recent apps. Tap the app icon, choose Split screen, and then select the other app. The two apps occupy separate sections, usually divided by a visible line.
The divider marks the boundary between the two apps, even when they are stacked vertically rather than side by side. Hypothetical comparison: a floating explanatory video
Now imagine the same adult reading notes while a small explanatory cricket video continues in a corner. That is PiP, not split screen. The video appears as a movable small window over the notes, so the notes are not given a separate, fixed half of the display.
The visual test is straightforward: a full-width boundary between two app areas suggests split screen; a smaller video box floating above another app suggests PiP. PiP availability depends on the app, so the layout may not be offered for every video service or video.
Which layout matches the reading task?
Choose split screen when both apps need deliberate, separate space—for example, definitions on one side and notes on the other. Choose PiP when the video is supporting material and the main task is reading underneath it. These are layout differences, not claims that either arrangement will work with every app. Pixel menus and gestures can vary by device or Android version.
